Border Collie Puppy

Buying a Border Collie puppy is a serious commitment and responsibility. The problem with the Border Collie is that it’s often portrayed in movies as a very intelligent and independent dog that makes a good pet for any family. It results in many dogs and puppies bought on impulse. Ignorant buyers obtain pets from puppy mills, pet stores, and backyard breeders. They know little on the breed’s needs and cannot usually find enough time for housetraining a puppy or walking and playing with the dog for several hours daily.

If a Border Collie puppy was not provided with basic training and socialization at the kennel, the owner finds it difficult to housebreak and control it. It results in a disobedient pet and a frustrated owner. To avoid such an unpleasant situation, a pet should be purchased from a reliable source. Only responsible and experienced breeders keep all their dogs as family members and socialize them around various people. Puppies from serious breeders are sold with a health guarantee. Their parents are checked for possible hereditary disorders prior to breeding. Though it’s impossible to prevent all genetic disorders, DNA testing helps minimize the risk of hip and elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis, trapped neutrophil syndrome, epilepsy, deafness, and eye problems.

The first 3-4 weeks of the puppy’s life are crucial for its further development. A Border Collie puppy bought from a reliable breeder is likely to grow into an intelligent, friendly, and affectionate dog, if provided with training and attention. Even a well-bred puppy from a champion bloodline can develop into a poor quality dog, if not given proper training and enough exercise. While the health and trainability of the puppy depend mainly on the breeder, the temperament of an adult dog depends on the owner.

The Border Collie is a very active working dog, designed for herding sheep. Dogs of this breed are quick to learn and can adapt to the lifestyle of the family. They make good companions for sport and excel in obedience and agility. In some areas, this breed is still used for herding. Border Collies should not be kept indoors with no task to do. Prior to buying a Border Collie puppy, think twice about the exercise needs of this energetic breed.
