Border Collies are considered a premier herding breed. Breed owners also state that the Border Collie is the most intelligent breed. Add brilliant personality qualities and appealing appearance and you have an ideal pet and working dog. No wonder many people are easily attracted to the breed and want to purchase a puppy immediately. This seems to be an unreasonable thing to do. Despite their wonderful traits, Border Collies have specific care requirements and are not the breed for everyone. Many dogs that have been bought on impulse find themselves in rescues because of the owner's inability to cope with incipient difficulties. Hence, it is wise to learn more about Border Collies before purchasing a puppy and decide if it is the right breed for you.
Border Collies - Dogs - Breed Specifics
Border Collies were bred for herding activities. Unlike many other working breeds they have managed to preserve their working qualities and are now used on farms and excel in various canine trials and shows. The Border Collie is a very active dog. Exercise needs depend greatly on the age of the dog, climate, diet, and other factors. Breeders and owners are advised to watch their dogs carefully and determine the amount of exercise individually. Overall, Border Collies need a few 45-minute walks a day. Since the breed has a weather resistant coat, the dogs do not care what sort of weather it is outside. They are happy to play in any weather and enjoy walking off-leash. Choose a safe area and let your dog run for a while.
Play is the best exercise for Border Collies. They like to fetch things and prefer vigorous exercise. They need both physical and mental exercise. Border Collies also like swimming. This activity is strongly advised for dogs with hip dysplasia. Swimming does not injure bones and keeps the dog fit.
Border Collies - Dogs - Coat Care
Border Collies do not need a lot of grooming. They are moderate shedders. Shedding occurs mostly in spring and fall. Most care rules for other canines work for the Border Collie perfectly. Border Collies should be brushed a few times a week to get rid of dirt, dead hair, and keep the coat clean and healthy. Brushing is also applied during the shedding period. It reduces the amount of the hair shed. The breed has little doggy odor. Therefore, frequent bathing is not recommended. Also, check you dog's eyes and ears. Border Collies are healthy dogs and have few hereditary diseases.
