Border Collies are very popular dogs. They have brilliant characteristics as working dogs and pets. No wonder that the community of breed owners is constantly growing. Many breeders and owners acknowledge the importance of Border Collie clubs' activities. Breed clubs in the United States and around the world promote the breed and educate enthusiasts on the breed specifics. Many breed clubs also strive to preserve the Border Collie as a working dog. Unfortunately, many breeds that have originally been bred for work ended up in a show ring and are bred for show characteristics only.

Clubs are instrumental in promoting working qualities of the breed. They organize trials that help to determine the best breed representative. Clubs and associations also encourage breeders to strive for an ideal working Border Collie. Many breeders take the advantage of club membership. They are allowed to take part in conformation, agility, obedience, herding, tracking, and other activities.

In fact, Border Collies are second to none in herding. They were bred for these activities and are still the number one herding breed. The Border Collie is famous for its habit to eye the herd. The dog usually runs around the herd and gathers it to be led to the shepherd. High intelligence, good herding skills, and perfect eyesight aid the Border Collie in these activities.

Club members also enjoy tracking. The Border Collie excels in this canine sport. The breed tends to be very inquisitive and is always ready to work. Strive for pleasing the owners is also important to be the best tracking dog. Border Collies do well in AKC tracking, Shutzhund tracking, and Search and Rescue.

Border Collies Breeders - Border Collies are not as old as herding itself. The publications of the 19th century mention the breeds that resemble the current Border Collie in appearance. However, some say Dr. Caius mentioned the breed in his publications in 1570. The true Border Collie's history was influenced greatly by several famous dogs. The origin of the breed believed to lie in them. All these Border Collies were highly productive stud dogs and their temperament, their unique capacity to work and their outstanding performance in trials were inherited and developed in current Border Collies.

Old Hemp and Old Kep are referred to as the first true predecessors of the Border Collie breed. Old Hemp was born in 1893 and is known to have given the exterior model to the breed. It was an excellent trial dog that lost not a single trial. Old Kep was born in 1901 and is believed to have contributed to the temperament features of Border Collies. Old Kep had a kind nature. Its ability to control a flock of sheep, that is its "eye," made it a high achiever in trials. Old Kep won the competition 45 times.

Border Collies Information - Border Collies are known as a highly energetic, zealous and hard-working breed. It is incomparable as a herding sheepdog. The Border Collie has a natural instinct to herd, but, not only farmers can use this remarkable feature of the breed. It can keep an eye on your children or watch other pets. The Border Collie is called one of the most intelligent breeds. Due to its outstanding intellect and inborn ability to work nearly non-stop, it is always on the top of the list in obedience competitions.

The Border Collie is hyperactive. These dogs are meant for physical and mental challenges and are likely to get bored if you don't give them such.

Border Collies Pictures - Border Collies are referred to as herding dogs and are used in a variety of activities. This breed is considered the smartest one and is valued greatly for its intelligence, task solving abilities, and readiness to always please its owner. The Border Collie makes a wonderful hunting companion, tracking and herding dog, and obedience and agility competitor. Besides, it is a friendly companion for people of all ages.

Border Collies are medium-sized dogs. According to the AKC standard, approved in 1995, the Border Collie stands about 18-22 inches at the shoulder. Males and females differ both in height and weight. As a rule, a male weighs about 30-45 pounds. Females are slightly smaller. However, individual dogs can weigh more.

Border Collies Puppies - Border Collies are sheepdogs with a wide range of appearances. The large exterior diversity is acceptable because the Border Collie is often assessed according to herding skills. The Border's coat may be long or short and smooth or rough. The colors can vary from black and white to merle or tricolor, with white being dominating. Tan marks on legs and head are usual.

A little beard is characteristic of the breed. A long neck enables the Border Collie to "eye" livestock at a distance. The Border's tail is relatively long with a slightly curved tip. These dogs stand between 18-21 inches and weigh 35-55 pounds.

Border Collies Rescues - Border Collies are herding dogs, whose origin country is the United Kingdom. These sturdy medium-sized working dogs are considered the smartest sheepdogs. They are widely used to work sheep and cattle by farmers and shepherds. Border Collies are hardy, strong and sometimes even restless. They are always on the go.

Well-balanced body with a muscular loin, large chest and relatively short muzzle suggest stamina and endurance. The coat can be either long or short, but always dense. Because the Border Collie is initially meant to be a working dog, there is no definite appearance breed standard. Therefore, Border Collies can have black and white coat color, which is nevertheless most preferable, yellow and white, merle and tricolor.
