Border Collies - Dogs - Did You Know?

Border Collies originated in Great Britain about the 1700s. The breed gets its history from the Persian Sheepdog. Border Collies were known as excellent herding dogs for a few centuries. However, they got their official name no sooner than in 1915. Breeders put stress on the working qualities of the breed. They perfected the Border Collie for a long time and now the breed is one of the best working dogs. The Border Collie is considered one of the most trainable breeds. It is believed that one can hardly ever find a more intelligent dog. Border Collies need little training. The breed has inborn herding and tracking instincts. These dogs are very active and tend to make good pets.

However, there are some disadvantages of owning the breed. The Border Collie can be snappish. They display dominance towards children and seem to enjoy "herding" them too. Nipping on people's heels can be also an annoying habit in Border Collies.

If you need a dog for personal protection, the Border Collie seems to be a poor choice. These dogs were bred for herding and will hardly make good guarding dogs. However, the Border Collie makes a merry companion. The main thing to take care of is that the dog is not bored. Otherwise, it will start chewing whatever comes into sight and digging holes. Border Collies live for about 9-15 years.
